The Bitcoin Freedom Fund is an initiative of Agora designed to protect and empower human rights defenders living in Uganda with a regimw that is weaponizing financial systems to silence dissent. In Uganda, activists face frozen bank accounts, blocked mobile money transfers, intrusive financial surveillance, and deliberate economic pressure intended to cripple civic organizing. The Bitcoin Freedom Fund intends to counter these tactics by providing activists with secure, censorship-resistant financial tools built on Bitcoin’s decentralized infrastructure.
The Fund will give at-risk civic actors a safe way to receive donations, access emergency support, and move resources without state interference. It will also establish decentralized fundraising channels that allow individuals and civic groups to rebuild financial autonomy even when traditional banks, telecoms, or payment processors are compromised.
Beyond technology, the Bitcoin Freedom Fund will deliver practical training in digital security, private key management, peer-to-peer payments, and safe operational practices, ensuring that human rights defenders can operate resiliently even in high-risk, surveillance-heavy environments. By building a reliable, privacy-focused financial lifeline, the Bitcoin Freedom Fund will strengthen civil resistance, sustains vital human rights work, and offers a replicable model for protecting vulnerable communities wherever financial repression is used as a tool of control.
